Bosque Pehuén Residency Program: Multidisciplinary Nature Research Station
2022| Ears To See

This residency was organized collaboratively by Fundación Mar Adentro, Centro NAVE and Pro Helvetia Sudamérica. During this investigation, the group of artists deepened and gave continuity to Ears To See, a project by Swiss artist and choreographer, Lea Moro, who through dance-performance invites young audiences to a participatory exploration on soil and dirt by listening to the hidden details and the beings that are underground.

For four weeks, Lea Moro, with Andrés Bucci and Rommy González, developed this research in two workspaces: at the NAVE Artistic Creation and Residency Center in Santiago, and at Bosque Pehuén, Fundación Mar Adentro’s conservation area located in the Andean Araucanía in ​​Alto Palguín, Pucón.

In Bosque Pehuén, the program considered various activities. The residents could deepen their learning in relation to the biodiversity of the humid temperate forest. They went on hikes and talks through the forest in the company of members of the FMA team and experts, including biologist Constanza Monterrubio, with whom they talked about the types of soil present in the forest and how it affects the different species, and identified wild foods that are present in late spring. In addition, a dialogue was held with different project collaborators, including Gabriel Orrego, Miguel Bolt, Nicole Mintz from Bosque Fungi, and Fiorella Cordella and Virginia Lobos from Estudio Micelio, regarding soil restoration, mycology, and about different methodologies of artistic-scientific mediation that are happening in the territory.

The research also considered two workshops with young adults: the first at the Liceo Experimental Artístico Barrio Yungay, organized by NAVE in Santiago, and the second, organized by Fundación Mar Adentro in Gaia Sur, a center for learning and ecological retreat located in the Araucanía region, which was carried out in collaboration with Estudio Micelio and Bosque Fungi for students from Colegio Pucón, the Escuela Carileufu and the Liceo Bicentenario de Hotelería y Turismo.

During these activities, students participated in a mediation that explores movement, sound, and illustration in the open air, guided through Silent Disco technology, which allowed audiences to explore the natural environment through movement. They also took a walk through the forest, where the materiality of the territory was observed, to then participate in a free illustration and sound exercise, which concluded with the creation of a collective painting on canvas.

Installation and sound activation in Pucón

To conclude the residency, the group of residents exhibited part of their creative process and generated an activation around sound with the community of Pucón, through an audiovisual-sound installation that compiled illustration, video and sound material created during their time in Bosque Pehuen.

In this instance, children and adults participated in a mediation that considered an exploratory walk through sound and touch to Lake Villarrica and a small forest in the area. Meanwhile, in the exhibition room (located in the parish of the Francisco Valdés Foundation in Pucón) illustrations by Rommy González and two canvases (made in the workshop together with the students in Gaia Sur) were presented. In addition, the installation was accompanied by a soundscape, where four tracks made by Andrés Bucci with sounds and events that happened in the forest were presented.

About the residents:

Lea Moro – Choreography
Swiss choreographer and cultural manager Lea Moro has been creating performative projects since 2013. She has developed individual and collective works, as well as choreographic projects for young audiences on international tours. She completed her higher education in Systemic Organizational Development at artop, at the Humboldt-Universität Berlin, and in 2019-2020 she participated in the program “Curating in the Performative Arts” at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg. She has held teaching positions at DOCH – Stockholm School of Dance and Circus, Helsinki University of the Arts, HZT Berlin and Lausanne Manufacture. She is one of the designated production playwrights at Tanzhaus Zürich, and founded the Work it Out platform, where she works as a program playwright at Kaserne Basel.

Andrés Bucci – Sound
Chilean sound artist Andrés Bucci lives and works in Berlin. For years, he has
collaborated with Lea Moro on interdisciplinary projects such as “Sketch of Togetherness” and for the sound of the choreographic works: All Our Eyes Believe (2020), Ears To See (2022) and Another Breath (2022).

Rommy González – Illustration
Lives and works in Berlin since 2014. With a long career in Visual Communication, Graphic Design, Art Direction and Visual Arts, she has dedicated herself to explore her own interpretation of her surroundings by creating works of art inspired by nature and its hidden beauty. In 2004 she studied Graphic Design at DUOC UC, Santiago de Chile, Motion Graphics at the New York School of Visual Arts (SVA) in 2010, and she studied Cinematography Direction at the Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC) in Barcelona, ​​2012. Her enthusiasm for cultural projects led her to participate as creative director of independent projects, including the Chilean street art magazine Fragmentos and the tourist postcard magazine Stgo B.
