Textures and sounds of sand, sea, and wind envelop eight Strandbeests, beach animals, built with plastic tubes, imagined and built by artist, Theo Jansen. Each represents an animal from another one of his conceived evolutionary periods. Two of his Strandbeests can be activated manually or through wind-power and can move or even take a stroll in the park.

The exhibition also presents a cabinet filled with drawings, ideas, publications, objects, and prototypes developed by Jansen in his artistic and research-oriented process of creation. Mathematics, anatomy, aerodynamics, understanding of nature, and newly conceived ways of relating to the environment come together in a visual ensemble to enkindle new ways of observing life.

The documentary Strandbeesten (2008, 32 min), by Alexander Schlichter is also continuously being screened in the audiovisual room of the first floor.

Animaris Ordis

Located on the first floor, it will be outdoors during the following schedules,

Tues thru Fri 11:00 – 11:30 & 15:00 – 15:30

Sun and Sat 11:30 – 12:00, 16:00 – 16:30, 17:00 – 17:30

Animaris Plaudens Vela

On the second floor, this animal is being re-animated. There are five presentations per day, with a maximum capacity of 80 ppl. Schedules are as follow,

Tues thru Fri 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 15:30 & 17:00
