Mini Theos workshop, conducted in early 2018 by Fablab UC.

After 34 workshops conducted in Santiago throughout the entire exhibition period of Wind Algorithms, in which more than 400 children and young adults participated, the Theo Jansen Educational Program will continue through the CECREA centers of the Chilean Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage with the collaboration of Fundación Ecoscience.

The upcoming activities were designed by CECREA instructors following their participation in Fundación Mar Adentro’s Active Teachers program, which generates new possibilities for multidisciplinary work and connections between art and science.

Information on upcoming workshops is provided below.

ConCiencia Bus Workshops

Creating ConCiencia: Artistic Fauna Inspired by the Work of Theo Jansen, is the name of the workshops developed in conjunction with Fundación Ecoscience that will travel across Chile through the ConCiencia (a play on words that combines “consciousness” and “science” in spanish) bus. To explore the concepts of diversity and evolution, workshop participants will construct an animal/toy from prefabricated parts made of reused materials, able to move because of its core rotating piece connected to a power source.

Dates: August 17th to September 21st

Date and Time: Monday to Friday from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm.

Location: CECREA Iquique (Baquedano 951)

Creating Living Beasts

Designed by: Loreto Zambrano

Focusing on the creative process after observing the landscape–each student jotting down their observations in a logbook–participants will attempt to create “beasts” that have an environmental function. The workshop reviews technological and organic aspects to understand a body’s movement in space. The workshop is conducted by an art and dance teacher.

Date and Time: October 3rd, 5th, 12th & 31st and November 7th

Location: Change of venue, place to be confirmed

Participating age range: 11 to 16 years old

Images of Sound

Designed by: Claudia Barría

In this workshop, students will find and become familiar with the sounds of nature and the traditional music of the Chiloé archipelago in order to set frequencies that are designed in patterns to create images and small sculptures. Environmental issues and the accumulation of pollution are also addressed in creating these sound pieces.

Date and Time: August 17th to October 26th

Location: CECREA Castro (Serrano 320)

Participating age range: 13 to 17 years old

Capacity: 15 participants

Aquatic Beasts

Designed by: Paulina Martínez

Focusing directly on the interests and ideas of the children, an architect will help guide this activity.

Dates: October 5th to 25th

Time: 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Location: JJ.VV Cardenal Raúl Silva Henriquez, on the corner of Los salesianos Hornillas

Participating age range: 11 to 15 years old

Kinetic-Luminescent Aquatic Organisms

*Reference image of project design, final result may vary.

Designed by: Magaly VeraBased on the premise that “nature’s solutions are the simplest,” participants, after observing water organisms and their relationship with the environment, will “force” evolution to produce objects that generate light by movement in the water and perform a restorative function. To conclude, the students will reflect on the effects of climate change.Date and Time: From September 1st – TBALocation: CECREA Punta Arenas (Pedro Montt 809)Participating age range: 10 to 14 years old
