The Irrational Optimist

Synopsis: World renowned dutch visual artist and physicist Theo Jansen–creator of the Strandbeests (beach animals), kinetic sculptures built with simple materials that come alive with the force of the wind–proposes to return to nature, to observe and learn from it. Filmed during his visit to Chile to inaugurate his exhibition Algoritmos del viento (Wind Algorithms) at the Cerrillos National Center for Contemporary Art, this documentary proposes to review his life and work, creative processes and concerns through a journey from the Andes mountain range to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Evolution, frustration and imagination have driven this irrational optimist to coexist with his autonomous creations for the past twenty-seven years.
