This publication portrays the creative process behind the production of Animitas, an installation made by renowned French artist Christian Boltanski, who worked with the Atacameñan community of Talabre, in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile in 2014 alongside curator Beatriz Bustos O. with the support of Fundación Mar Adentro.

This work was also part of his retrospective presented in the National Museum of Fine Arts of Santiago, Chile in 2014-2015 and was later presented at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.

The book Animitas was edited in English and Spanish by Mar Adentro in collaboration with Hueders publishing house, and is a book that invites readers to understand the creative processes that take place in collaborative art installations through a series of interviews with the artists, the curator, texts on the importance of animitas (Chilean term which comes from the word “soul” is used to refer to a place of religious or mythological veneration and are commonly seen on the side of a road or in public spaces), as well as information on the Atacameñan culture.

Considering the international relevance of Christian Boltanski, it has been very important for FMA to distribute the book Animitas to other places, hence more than 380 copies have been donated to different institutions both in Chile as well as abroad.
