Fundación Origen, organizing institution of the Agroecological School of Pirque, opens Mercado Campesino (Farmers Market), a fair trade area for products of small farmers using sustainable practices. The project is being developed jointly with INDAP, of the Ministry of Agriculture, within its program to support Family Agricultural Farming.
Honey, free-range eggs, lettuce, kale, tomatoes, flowers, season fruits, jams, cheeses, cosmetics, ice cream, grains, sauces, syrups, desserts, cakes, breads, and wooden, wicker and leather crafts: these are some of the products that can be found in this new space, Fundación Origen’s Farmers Market in Pirque and in it’s agro-ecological fair every Saturday.
Long and friendly tables for coffee with biscuits, empanadas or clay-oven cooked quiches, add on to the organic produce offered by the small farmer groups organized through INDAP. There are also organic vegetable garden, ceramic, meditation, beekeeping, recycling or healthy cooking courses every week, as well as field trips for children to feed chickens and goats, and learn to make bread after grinding wheat. In addition, people can bring food that they do not use for barter and can in return take something else, or just give them away.
The idea is that this market, located in the heart of Pirque, will become a meeting place for the community, and will welcome producers from various parts of the country who work with the INDAP Manos Campesinas label. It has been conceived as a space for commercialization that seeks to bridge the gap between the producer and the final consumer, improve their profits and, in turn, further strengthen networks.
Another project of the Origen Market is to implement the Chilean Cooking School, in alliance with chef Carlo von Muhlenbrock, so that students of the Agroecological School learn to elaborate what they have produced and thus add value to their food. It is another way to encourage future generations of farmers to opt for life in the countryside, with decent and productive work opportunities.
